In the latter post we talked about the importance of choosing a company name. Now we would like to discuss a bit about brand names. Mainly, there are three types.
The first one and somewhat the most important is the family brand name. As the name suggests, it is the name under which all of your products will be released. Thus, creating a bond between the name and the costumer, based on trust, every new product will benefit from its fame.
The second type is represented by the individual brand name. It does not identify a brand with a specific company and it’s focused on a single product. While the family brand name is the best way to go, you may encounter situations when going individual is the wise choice, for example, in order to protect the family brand name from failure when releasing a product in a new market segment.
The third type is the combined brand name. As you already might have guessed, the idea is that of creating a sort of association between the family and individual brand names, but also keeping some distinctive features of the product.
Because the name is very important when it comes to the way people relate to products, it is important to choose carefully a brand name. When deciding upon such a name you should see if it evokes positive associations, suggests product benefits, it’s memorable and easy to pronounce, and if it is distinctive.
